These terms govern your use of LizardBox — the website at lizardbox.co, the web app at app.lizardbox.co, and the LizardBox apps for iOS and Android. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you don't, don't use it.
LizardBox is built and operated by AJ Esamann. "We" and "us" mean that operator; "you" means you.
Eligibility
You must be at least 13 to create a LizardBox account. Younger keepers are welcome to use it through an account created and managed by a parent or guardian, who is the account holder and is responsible for it. If you are using LizardBox on behalf of an organization, you confirm you are authorized to accept these terms for it.
Your account
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for everything done through your account. Give us accurate details, keep your email address current — it is how you recover access — and tell us promptly if you think someone else is using your account.
Plans and billing
The Free plan covers up to 5 critters with unlimited reminders and the full log and species library. It is free indefinitely and needs no card. Pro removes the critter limit and adds species identification and the weekly recap email, for $9.99 billed monthly or $79.99 billed annually.
- Where you pay. Subscriptions bought in the iOS or Android app are processed by Apple or Google and are subject to their terms. Subscriptions bought on the web are processed by our payment provider. We never handle your card details.
- Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period at the then-current price, until cancelled.
- Cancelling. Cancel any time. Purchases made through Apple or Google must be cancelled in that store — deleting your LizardBox account does not cancel them. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- Refunds. We don't offer refunds. Because you keep Pro until the period you paid for ends, you are never paying for time you won't use. Where local law gives you a refund right, that right stands regardless of this paragraph, and purchases made through Apple or Google follow their refund policies.
- Price changes. We may change our prices. Any change takes effect at your next renewal, and we will give you notice before it does.
- Going back to Free. Nothing is deleted. If you are over the Free limit, your extra critters become read-only — you keep their full history and can still view everything, but you can't log new events to them until you are back under the limit or upgrade again.
Your content is yours
You keep all rights to what you put into LizardBox — your critters, logs, notes, reminders and uploads. You grant us only the license we need to operate the service: to store your content, process it, back it up, and display it back to you and to anyone you deliberately share it with. That license exists so the app can function and ends when you delete the content or your account.
You are responsible for having the right to upload what you upload, and for the content itself being lawful.
Acceptable use
Don't:
- Break the law, or use LizardBox to record or facilitate illegal activity — including trade in protected species.
- Upload content that is unlawful, abusive, or infringes someone else's rights.
- Try to access accounts, data or systems that are not yours.
- Scrape, resell or redistribute the species library, or circumvent plan limits and rate limits.
- Attack, overload or reverse-engineer the service, or automate access to it in a way that degrades it for others.
We may suspend or terminate an account that does any of this.
The species library is not veterinary advice
Our species profiles are built from a mix of data sources and tools, including AI, then reviewed by our team. We work hard to get the details right, but care needs vary between animals and between sources, and occasionally something slips past us. Treat a profile as a starting point rather than veterinary advice, and confirm anything critical to your animal's health or safety with a vet or another source you trust. If something looks off, report it and we'll take a look.
You remain solely responsible for the care of your animals. We are not liable for decisions you make based on the species library.
Species identification
Species identification is a Pro feature on iOS and Android that sends the photo you submit to an AI provider and returns its best guesses. It is an aid, not a determination — it will sometimes be wrong, especially with similar-looking species, juveniles and unusual morphs. Don't rely on it for anything that matters without confirming it. Use is subject to a daily cap per account, which we may adjust.
Reminders are best-effort
Reminders depend on push notification services, email providers, your device settings and your network — none of which we control. We work hard to deliver every one on time, but we cannot guarantee that a given reminder arrives, arrives on time, or arrives at all. Don't use LizardBox as the only safeguard for care that an animal's health depends on.
QR tags
Each critter has a QR code you can print. Anyone holding that tag or its link can view that critter's profile without signing in — this is deliberate, so a sitter or vet can scan it. Sharing a tag is your choice, and you are responsible for who you give it to. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what it exposes.
Third-party services
LizardBox links to and relies on services we don't operate — including our merch store, our public feedback board, and species imagery loaded from iNaturalist. Those services have their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their content or availability.
Availability and changes
We aim to keep LizardBox running and improving, but we don't promise uninterrupted or error-free service. We may add, change or remove features. If we discontinue a feature you depend on, or the service itself, we will give you reasonable notice and time to export your data.
Ending things
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. Export your data first if you want to keep it — deletion is permanent. We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, or if we are required to by law. If we terminate your account without cause, we will refund any unused portion of a subscription you bought directly from us.
Disclaimers
To the fullest extent the law allows, LizardBox is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, non-infringement, and any warranty about the accuracy or completeness of the species library.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or harm to or loss of an animal, arising from your use of LizardBox. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or fifty US dollars.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us against claims, losses and costs arising from your content, your use of LizardBox, or your breach of these terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of the State of Indiana have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protections of the mandatory law of the country you live in.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We will move the date at the top, and for material changes we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use LizardBox after that means you accept the updated terms.
The rest
If a provision of these terms is unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a right isn't a waiver of it. You may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours to a successor of the business. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between us about LizardBox.
